At the end of May when it was made official that I was going to Rio I thought “It’s still 3 months away”, well those months have flown by and I wonder where the time has gone.

The Australian Para Cycling Team for Rio is now based in Montichiari, Italy where we are having our pre-departure camp.  We have taken over the Hotel Faro in this small town and I am sure that the locals are wondering what is up when they see a trike, handcycle, tandem and 2 wheels riding out of the hotel parking lot!  But everyone here at the hotel and surrounding area have been very welcoming and trying out their english on us.

It is now very real that we are on the final stages of preparation for the Paralympics.  In less than a month the opening ceremonies will occur and one week later I will be racing my first race!  It is getting really exciting, but in saying that I still have a lot of training to do.  After the last couple of weeks at home with real life issues it is really nice to be in a warm climate with nothing to worry about except for eating, sleeping and training!

Last night we even had a visit from Olympian Brad McGee, who had just got off a plane from Rio where he was with the Australian Road team.  He was able to impart some valuable information about the games village and the city itself!  It was great to get the excitement of going started with his descriptions of village life and he left us with one great thought, he said “Enjoy every moment and every meter.”  What a great way to think about what we are going to experience.

I’ll be posting from here for the next few weeks and hope to be able to describe the excitement in the lead up to Rio!

Ciao for now!!
