Today I received an email from my Aunt Rheta and Uncle Bob in Canada.  The email was short and simple and said  “This is a wonderful, thought-provoking, one minute clip.  Full of wisom…and very brief.  It’s not a joke, it’s not religious, it’s not political.  It’s just special.”  And oh how right they were.  So before you continue reading this blog please view this clip by clicking here

Thought-provoking?  Yes I think so.

It reminded me about listening to a friend of mine Warren MacDonald (you can find his story here) and the one thing that he said that has stuck with me is  “People ‘See’ a wheelchair and that is all they see.  But it’s not what you see, but how you see the world that determines your reality, or your outcome.  Forget the old saying ‘What you see is what you get’.  Everybody ‘sees’ differently.  Where one person ‘sees’ an obstacle, another ‘sees’ an opportunity.  What you see doesn’t really mean anything, its ‘how’ you see that determines your lot in life.  ‘How you see is what you get’.

One thing that taking part in the Paralympics has taught me and reinforced to me is that you can’t look at someone with any type of disability and pre-judge what that person can and cannot do. People can be amazing in their determination and in London I saw some incredible feats accomplished.

I really think that this is how I have lived since my life with MS began in 1998.  Being told that I wouldn’t be able to continue to work or do sport made me believe that no one was going to tell me what to do.  It wasn’t “how” I was seeing life pan out.  And I am proof that “How you see is what you get”.

So thank you Rheta and Bob for sending that video clip through, it reminded me that we as a world have to start ‘seeing’ things differently and thank you Warren for helping me change that word from What to How!

Oh Carol, How true. “How you see is what you get”. I’m trying to live this way. It is difficult so I think of you and it makes it a little easier to keep on trying.
Both videos are so very thought provoking.
    Love you.
