The other day I was speaking to a man who wanted to get back into exercising and possibly riding a trike. He was diagnosed with MS a number of years ago and was told to speak to me about it. He said that he had started exercising at a local gym and doing some spin classes and that it always went well for the first few weeks when he was really motivated. But as the weeks went on the rest of his life tended to take over and his motivation was lost.
I told him that was the problem that word – motivation. We can all be motivated on any given day to either get fit, lose that extra weight we are all carrying around or look at changing our lives. But being motivated isn’t what its about, it’s about ‘Commitment’. Without the commitment to stick to our plan to attain our goal it will never happen.
I had related my meeting that I had with this man to my husband when I got home that day and yesterday morning it came back to hit me in the face. I got up to go for a ride yesterday morning and I was to meet my friend Kym at 7am but I had told him that if it was pouring rain I would text to cancel. Well when I woke up it was raining, but I got up, got ready and then looked at the radar. The radar showed it was clearing but from the moment I heard that rain my brain went into that “I don’t want to ride” mode.
As the rain stopped and I stood in the living room I stated out loud that I really didn’t want to ride and right away my husband said one word – “Commitment”. With that word resonating in my brain I smiled at him, put my helmet on and said “you got me” and out the door I walked. Yes I was tired, yes my legs felt dead, yes I had had a big week of training but I went because I was reminded of why I do what I do. I am committed to a year of racing and doing the best I can do.
Yes the ride was hard but at least I went out and did it and I have my friend Kym to thank for his commitment to riding with me because I certainly wasn’t breaking any speed records!
