With such a crazy time in our city right now and more so in our world we are all having a hard time finding the good in life. I’ve heard people complaining about having to stay home (except for the four things you can go out for), having to wear masks, not being able to work, not being able to go to the pub, not being able to see friends and the list goes on.
You have every right to be unhappy about the situation, but that doesn’t change it. It is what it is and we all need to work together to get through it, other cities, states and countries have. We have to get through it to make our world a better place and to honour those that have died because of this virus.
I’ve had my moments over the last 5 months myself but I have chosen to try and ‘find the good’ by learning to meditate and just be present in the moment. I’ve even been writing a gratitude journal which I fill out every night before I go to sleep. I want to focus on what I have each night so that I wake up the next morning remembering those good things. I tell you its not easy to find 3 things I’m grateful for each day, you have to work at it, but I am getting better at it and it is getting easier.
Our brains take note of all the bad things happening because let’s face it we are wired that way. At one point in time our survival depended on taking note of bad things, things that could eat us before we could it them! It also doesn’t help when all you see and hear in the media is negative. We have to work hard to find the good things.
I was reminded of this today while walking my dog Jack. He’s not in a hurry to go anywhere he has to smell all the new smells, look down all the new paths and sniff every new dog at the park, it’s exciting and it’s all good to him. Walking with him through the bush paths at our local park has made me open my eyes to the world around me. The other day walking I spotted two rocks that were at the bottom of a tree and it made me smile, painted in glorious colours and just left for people to see. Now if I hadn’t been looking for the good, I would never have seen them!
Stay safe everyone and take care.
