A quick update to let you all know that I have my first races of the year this weekend. This year the National Handcycle Series has included Trikes. This is fantastic because we really don’t get a lot of racing apart from Nationals and International competition if we are lucky enough to be included on the National Team.
So this Friday I am heading up to Sydney for two races one on each day of the weekend. Plus a bit of an added bonus the NSW Handbike and Trike Track Championships are on Friday night. Handbikes and Trikes on a track you say, well it will be interesting!!
I have been told that the track is fairly flat, not banked like most tracks but even the smallest camber on the road can be off putting, so Friday night will be interesting. I have 3 events before the tea break and then 2 more after it and as a trike rider fairly new to the whole cycling world, events like Trike Keirin, 200m Flying Sprint and 2km Trike Scrach Race are all new to me. Lets hope that there is someone there to explain all of these…or I’ll just follow everyone else!
I’ve had some friends who do ride track wonder how the heck I will do it on a trike…well I’ll be able to let you know after the weekend! Other than those races on Friday it is back to the road where I am much more comfortable with a Criterium on Saturday and the Road Race on Sunday. And there are 3 trike riders which is just awesome, mind you I am the only female! We have to work on changing that, we need more female Para-cycling riders!
I am really looking forward to some good racing and also watching the Handcyclists. They are amazing athletes who have incredible upper body strength and no doubt there will some very close races!
Cycling Australia have even given us some publicity which is fantastic for Para-cycling and hopefully will continue through the entire series and for Nationals. To read the article click here
