With only 4 days until the 2017 International Para Cycling competition begins I am really excited about another year of racing. You see I never get tired of racing and the joy of catching up with other cyclists from around the world. It will be the first time we have all caught up since Rio and I am really looking forward to finding out how everyone is and what they have been up to.
The Australian Para Cycling team arrived at Malpensa airport in Milan last Thursday and then had a 5 hour drive up to the town of Spilimbergo which is about 20km from Maniago, where the 1st World Cup will be held. The area is beautiful to ride around as we aren’t far from the Dolomites mountain range. The first ride we had on Friday was one of those rides that you just want to stop and take photos! So we did! It was just about ticking the legs over and trying to get the flight out of the body.
For me the last 4 days have been tough. For the first time ever I have really felt the effect of the flights and jet lag has been a serious curse! But today I am finally starting to feel better, even sleeping the whole night…until about 5am that is (but better than 3am!)
The team has ridden the Time Trial course and we think it will be a fast one, but tough and Wednesday we will head out to the road course to have a look at it. It will be an interesting start and finish as it is all brick cobble in the town centre. You will certainly want to be in front before you hit it. I must say that with 3 wheels and high pressure tyres it will be an interesting ride!
We have some new riders to the International road racing arena and they are all excited to test out their skills against the world’s best Para riders.
Racing starts on Friday with everyone doing the TT that day. The road races are then split over 2 days and I will be racing that on Saturday. If anyone is interested the Start Lists/Results/Standings can be found by clicking here
