With the International racing season about to begin, with the first World Cup race in May, my training has picked up quite a bit with more kilometres every week and strength sessions in the gym.  I’m tired but I know that in the long run it is what is needed to get faster and stronger.

Easter weekend…what glorious weather we have had in Melbourne, perfect riding weather.  This weekend gave me the opportunity to do a number of rides in different areas of Melbourne.

Good Friday was a St. Kilda club ride, the Velo Vendredi ride with the InForm teams and about 50 club members from St Kilda to Reserve Road and Mordialloc.  Then another club ride on Saturday to Mordialloc with about 18 of us.  Both wonderful groups and the obligatory coffee at Soul Racer Cafe at the end of each ride.

Easter Sunday morning myself and 5 other women from the St. Kilda Cycling Club headed up to Hurstbridge to do a loop that I do quite often.  None of the others had ever done the loop so I was really looking forward to introduce a new area to them.  It was a beautiful morning and with the sun shining brightly we head out on Arthurs Creek Road.  I think the things that I noticed the most as we headed out was the smell of the eucalyptus bush that we were riding through and the sound of the cockatoos in the trees. The bush smell is magnificent and the screeching of the birds is extremely loud! But these two things alone tell you that you are well and truly out of the city.

At the start the wind was pretty non existent but did pick up a bit towards halfway, but that meant that on the way home we would have a tailwind.

When we reached Strathewen I was able to point out the beautiful memorial for the local victims of the Black Saturday Bush Fires in 2009.  It is truly a moving tribute to those lost and we took a few minutes out here to pay our respects.

With the sun shining brightly we headed for home with the wind behind us giving us that little push back and upon arriving back at our parking area we then had the most important decision of the day…where to have coffee and some food.  A local cafe was the winner as were we when we tucked into some lovely food and good coffee.  My weekend finished off with a short ride to the Fitzroy pool on Monday for swim squad and a visit to the local gym.

The weekend was not without spending some great time with Russ, his wonderful culinary skills in the form of beautiful dinners and some Easter chocolate to wrap up a wonderful long weekend.  (Even Jack ‘the wonder dog’ had his share of Easter treats.)  I even made it to a concert at the Palais Theatre with Hannah MacDougall to hear Rag ‘n’ Bone Man.  If you haven’t heard his music then you much google him and listen to it…magnificent!

As my time draws near to head for Europe I know that I have had quality training and I look forward to the next couple of weeks of training in Germany with my good friend Hans Peter Durst and visiting with his lovely wife Ulrike.  How lucky am I to have such wonderful people to ride with in the most glorious locations…look out Europe here I come!
