I have to admit it has been a very long time since I have written a blog.  I think that I felt like I had nothing to say over the last 6 months and to be honest maybe I still don’t.  But life has gone on and my life has been a very busy one, since my last blog in November last year.  It has been an amazing 6 months with family visiting, training and racing as per the usual, speaking to all kinds of groups from huge corporates, to small business to children in schools and I have loved every minute of it.

Right now I am in Europe getting some racing in.  I decided that this year was the year of “NO EXPECTATIONS”.  To be honest I have accomplished everything that I could possibly have accomplished as a Para Cyclist.  But I still love training and racing so have been doing just that.

Having “No Expectations” does not mean that I am not going to give it my all!  It just means that I came into this year wanting to have fun, enjoy racing, catch up with old friends and not worry too much about where I would place on or off the podium.  So far with this mindset I have had some of the best racing I have ever had!  I know that some would think that this is a weird way of thinking, especially this year, as it is an important one to gain points for the country in the lead up to the Tokyo Paralympics, but it has certainly worked for me!

Funny enough I came into the year a bit fearful of what how I was going to think about this year. In saying that I think I was more worried about what other people thought about my plans.  So even at my age I have to learn to stop caring what other people think…about a lot of things!  There is a great quote by Lucy Bloom “Everything you want is on the other side of fear”.  She is so right because so far this year has gone better than planned and I have had the best time racing ever!

So I think that I will continue to live this year with “No Expectations”, keep enjoying the training and the racing because I keep learning something more every single day.

It seems like your approach and attitude takes away a lot of stress and/or worry which allows you the freedom to just ride. It sounds like the perfect recipe for success!!!

Ellie, I think you are so right! I always worried about getting on the top step of the podium. With that out of the way it is much easier and I have learnt to concentrate on my own race and not anyone else’s! Hope to see you in Canada in August.
