Today was the last day of the 3rd World Cup in Matane, Quebec and it turned out to be a great day for the Australian contingent.

The C women were out in force this morning and for the first time ever the C4 and C5 women had to start and ride with the C1-2 men. This made the field a huge number of 42 riders through the technical course. There were a numb of crashes which occurred along the way but luckily all our girls stayed out of harms way.

The best part of the race came down to the finish of the C4 race with Alex Green and Sue Powell battling it out in an all out sprint for the finish line! Seems like a few of us have had those finishes, in the end they were awarded the same time but Sue was awarded the win. But that gave Australia Gold and Silver for the race.

The next race of the day was the Men’s C3-5 categories which again made the field large with 47 riders. Two of our C5 riders were able to stay with the main bunch and towards the end of the race Michael Gallagher was able to pull away from the group, with Alistair Donohue making sure he helped slow the chase group. This gave Michael the chance to cross the line in first place giving Australia another Gold medal for the day!

Next up were the tandem pair of Matt Formston and Mick Curran who unfortunately had punctured in the Time Trial the other day taking them out of contention. Well they certainly made up for it today when on the first lap they broke away from the main bunch with 2 other tandems and with only 3 laps to go were joined by 2 more. Towards the end of the second lap they made their breakaway and made it across the line 19 seconds ahead of the second place Canadians, so this gave Australia it’s 3rd Gold medal of the day!

It was a great hit out for a warm up event especially since we didn’t have bikes for 5 days and everyone is really looking forward to World Champs starting on Thursday the 29th of August. We leaves the ungodly time of 4:25 am tomorrow morning to catch the ferry across to Baie-Comeau. Trucks have been packed tonight an.d we are about to head to bed.

Everyone on the team has had pretty good rides and are looking forward to the next races, we all have to look past any minor concerns and reach for positive possibilities. Each and every one of our riders has the possibility to do even better than they have here and I have no doubt that they will!
