I met up with the rest of the Aussie team in Atlanta, Georgia and we spent the night at a hotel there before we headed to Greenville, South Carolina, which was about 161 kms from Atlanta.
Getting to our hotel was pretty easy as we only had to travel on basically one highway all the way from Atlanta. We were in a convoy of 4 vehicles and even though we arrived well before check in time the staff at the Drury Inn and Suites Hotel were fabulous getting most of us in to rooms. Once we had unloaded our gear, we headed to lunch, then it was time to put all the bikes, trikes and hand cycles together and go for a short spin.
Everything is so close to our hotel and right across the street we have the “Whole Foods Market” which is not only a supermarket but has some great ready made food in the form of a hot bar and a salad bar, plus a number of other options you can order. They have natural and organic food and are extremely environmentally friendly. You just fill a try with food and take it to the cash register and they weight it. Meals are very inexpensive this way, usually under $10 for an entire meal, so needless to say this is where we are getting most of our meals from!
We’ve had the last few days riding not only the course for the World Championships but also around Greenville and it has been extremely hot and humid. Even riding in the morning at 9:30am the other day was 30 degrees, but it’s not so much the heat that gets you, but the humidity can be stifling.
The athletes are slowly arriving in town and today at the Drury we now have the Netherlands, Canada and I think the Swiss team. The Germans, British, Irish and French are just down the road. Our hotel is situated right on the road that forms part of the course and the course itself has a few challenges, but the road surface is fantastic and I absolutely love it! There are a couple of little climbs which will test us, but I love the climbs. It will just be the heat and humidity that will dictate how well I go. At least everyone else has the same conditions to face.
We are on the pointy end of finishing up our training to get ready to race, but we have had a few laughs along the way!
