Unlocking Your Hidden Potential

How many times have we said to ourselves, “I could never do that” or “I won’t try that, I’d just look silly”? I know I’ve done it more than once. But if we don’t try, we’ll never discover our full potential. You might find you’re great at something new, or you may simply fall in love with it.

As children, we’re naturally curious, but as we age, that curiosity tends to fade. Relearning curiosity is essential for unlocking hidden potential. When I had a trike made—22kg with a steel frame—I initially used it just to ride to and from rowing training. The idea of racing it had never crossed my mind. But when someone convinced me to try, it opened doors I hadn’t imagined.

I could have easily said no. Transporting my trike up to Queensland wasn’t easy, but I made it work. I wasn’t about to let the fear of racing stop me from giving it a go. I knew perfection was out of the question, so I focused on enjoying the experience. By setting my fear aside, I found something I not only loved but also happened to be pretty good at.

Unlocking potential is like digging for treasure—it may take time and a few tries, but when you strike gold, it’s worth every ounce of effort.

Think of one thing you’ve put off because of self-doubt and take that first step today. You just might discover your own gold.

The key to unlocking your potential is already in your hand. You just have to turn it.
